<p>MEDICAL COSTS are rising astronomically . Since 1959, the medical care component of the U.S. consumer price index has about do led. Since 1950, the share of gross national product going to medical care has increased from 4.5 to 6.4 per cent. Partly in response to its growing quantitative importance, economists are becoming increasingly interested in the economics of medical care.</p>
