A New Framework for Understanding How Young Children Create External Representations for Puzzles and Problems

There are two main approaches to understanding the development of children's notational knowledge: (a) focus on children's learning of different notational systems whose features are based on cultural conventions; and (b) examine unique notations that children create in new situations that may use multiple notational systems.
