I examine whether the notion of transplanting a person's consciousness into a computer makes sense, no matter how advanced the technology. I
conclude that it does, but arriving at this answer leads us to rethink our concept of selfhood in a way that can have far-reaching repercussions.
For instance, it is to some extent a matter of choice whether we ascribe personhood to a computer or a human body, and no person can survive the passage of time because there is no personal identity over time.
