The rising prices of gasoline, lines at service stations, and occasional unavailability of gasoline are evidence of short term, and possibly long term problems with petroleum supply. This hearing is performing a useful service in exploring alternative sources of liquid fuel, particularly that for automobiles. Since none of these alternative sources could make an appreciable contribution for some years, it is only the intermediate and long terms that are relevant; I will leave behind, with relief, the morass of short term supply problems.
