Each of the functional systems within a city is highly interactive. The demand for transportation depends on the locations of residential areas, work areas, shopping areas, and recreation areas. The location and type of housing demanded depends on the quality and cost of available transportation. Other important components in the analysis include the size of city, demand for freight transportation, amount of congestion, and means for regulating congestion.
