Estimation is an important part of mathematical cognition, one that is pervasively present in the lives of both children and adults. Consider just a few everyday examples. How long will it take you to finish your chores? What will a large pizza cost us? How many people were at the game? About how much is 75 x 31? How fast can that Lamborghini go? Estimation may be used more often in everyday life than any other quantification process.
