Abstract: "The application of recently developed process optimization strategies is motivated and reviewed from a Newton perspective. Over the past fifteen years Newton-type methods have been used to solve difficult simulation problems. Similar principles and advantages also extend to process optimization. Using the Newton framework we discuss recent improvements to nonlinear programming algorithms and the application to large-scale systems. The improvements in the optimization strategy also lead us to consider new and more difficult process problems. Recent results relating to three of these: simultaneous optimization and heat integration, optimization of processes with differential equation models, sensitivity of optimal flowsheets will be reviewed. Finally future directions will be discussed that address the solution of larger and more difficult optimization problems."
