A tutorial for teaching Chemical Engineering students newly developed methods of operating procedure synthesis is presented. Based on previous research in developing a formal approach to operating procedure synthesis, the methods shown combine planning strategies from Artificial Intelligence with causal models. The tutorial introduces concepts such as system decomposition, modelling, constraint analysis, and planning. An example is then presented, showing applications of these concepts to a chemical processing system.
