Abstract: "This report describes some preliminary ideas in the automatic generation of the Medial Axis Transform (MAT) from discretized objects. The methods presented are similar in spirit to thinning algorithms in two and three dimensions described by various authors over the past twenty years. However, it appears that most of the past work was motivated by domains other than design, thus allowing it to remain at the level of a discrete representation. The goal of this work is to generate continuous skeletons of a truly lower dimension, which can then serve as approximations to the MAT."
