Technology and Group Performance
This paper will examine the role of technology on group performance.. It presents a new way to think about modeling group performance in organizations. The paper begins by examining some current approaches to modeling work group effectiveness. The next section identifies some of the basic concepts and assumptions underlying our approach to group effectiveness. Then an empirical question is posed which concerns the extent to which changes in group membership affect group performance.. A data set on coal mining crews is used to illustrate how our' technological approach would be utilized in examining work group performance and the effect of changes in work group membership on performance. It should be clear from these introductory remarks that our focus is on permanent groups in an organization that produce goods and services.
