Enhancing Efficiency: Optimizing the Supply Chain Processes of Gulf International Services
This research investigates the logistical bottlenecks within the cold supply chain for bananas in Qatar, particularly at the distributor level. It investigates Gulf International Services' (GIS) and hypothesizes that automation will improve overall costs and lead to supply chain efficiency. Utilizing primary research methods, including site visits and interviews to generate simulations on the AnyLogistix software, the study tested the impact of automation, specifically conveyor belt installation, on total annual costs and operational efficiency. Results indicated a significant reduction in total annual costs by 50% and an increase in per kg contribution of bananas by 64% due to automation, suggesting improved supply chain surplus. This research suggests that automation could be useful to create potential economic and environmental benefits for Qatar. The research identifies limitations related to data access and scope, proposing further investigation to broaden understanding of supply chain dynamics and their impact on financial performance and sustainability, in alignment with Qatar National Development Vision 2030.
