This workshop was facilitated at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Pennsylvania Geographical Society in Pittsburgh, PA, USA on November 7th.
Geographers from all focus areas can benefit from research data management, a term describing the organization, storage, preservation, and sharing of data collected and used in a research project. This workshop introduces good practices for data management for human, physical, and applied/GIS geographers, helping keep all the materials of your research projects organized, secure, backed-up, and well documented. These tips and tricks can be applied to single research projects or whole labs and encourage collaboration, efficiency, transparency, and reproducibility. I cover a number of digital tools that you might wish to add to your research workflows.
Those who are conducting geographical research are encouraged to incorporate the advice in these slides into their own research workflow. Those teaching data management for geographers are welcome to use any or all of these slides within their own teaching materials, following the CC-BY 4.0 license guidelines.
