This invited talk was delivered on April 6th, 2022, by Hannah Gunderman to the University of California-Davis Geography Graduate Group. Popular culture can be an excellent conduit through which to teach spatial data management concepts such as metadata, file naming, and documentation. In this talk, Pokémon, Dungeons and Dragons, and 1980s album covers are used as methods to teach foundational spatial data management concepts, describing lesson plans created by Hannah that outline hands-on learning activities (linked in the slide deck). The world of data, gaming, and popular culture is exciting and the interconnections between these three topics are strong!
