This paper identifies the emerging threats and vulnerabilities associated with IoT devices and analyzes the security implications of operating IoT devices within critical infrastructure, organizational, and personal networks. This includes an analysis of organizational, personal, and societal implications associated with implementing IoT devices leveraging insufficiently secured hardware and software and explores three potential solutions to reduce the number of security defects in IoT devices and improve organizational and individual cybersecurity through software-defined networking, secure IoT frameworks, and an IoT device security certification process.
