Computational Methods in Knit Design
As a researcher in the field of knit textile production, I conducted an investigation of the interdependent scales involved in this complex process. Through this exploration, I was able to identify opportunities to create a digital fabrication pipeline that addresses the various scales of working with knitted textile materials, using computation. The pipeline itself is an expression of compounding architectures, utilizing a tiered system that encodes various ways of addressing the scales of knitted textile materials using a combination of preexisting software tools and my own scripts. This thesis delves into the challenges and opportunities of integrating computational design methods with knitting processes, with a specific focus on the development of a digital fabrication pipeline for knitted textiles. By examining the properties of yarn, stitch types, design complexities, and garment construction across different scales of the knitting process, from micro to macro and beyond, the research presents a comprehensive workflow for digitally processing knitting machine instructions, offering flexibility and adaptability in the design process Despite the niche nature of this problem and its inherent challenges, this thesis presents an approach to knit textile production, utilizing the power of computation to address the complexities involved in the process. Through this research, I have identified the limitations and potential of computational knitting systems and emphasize the importance of democratizing access to these workflows. By making these tools more accessible, we can empower designers and researchers to create innovative and high-quality textiles, ultimately contributing to the evolution of the field as a whole. By presenting a digital fabrication pipeline for knitted textiles that addresses various scales of the knitting process, this research opens up new opportunities for innovation in the field.
