Understanding Everyday-Everywhere Chemicals and their Transformation Products via High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry of Environmentally-Relevant Matrices
Due to the lack of stringent chemical regulations, consumer goods often contain toxic, anthropogenic coumpounds, known as everyday-everwhere chemicals. Two such classes of these chemicals are flame retardants and pre- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Everyday-everywhere chemicals can undergo chemical transformation natural and built systems, generating more chemically complex mixtures that may pose additional toxicity concerns. Nontarget analysis, enabled by high-resolution mass spectrometry, is an important tool to analyze these complex chemical mixtures, enables the identification of new contaminants with undisclosed identities., and assists in identifying transformation products from known compounds.
