In an interview with Tony Cox on NPR’s Crossing the Divide, Sadiya Hartman explained that in her book Lose Your Mother, the aim was not to dismantle the myth of the motherland but rather to disenchant it. Through this process, she hoped to create a new connection based on the shared experiences we all have. In my writing, “A Place Where It Rains Mangos,” I delve into the complexities of the familial bonds shared within the Black Caribbean Diaspora, drawing on real personal encounters and memories that are uniquely my own. My writing seeks to explore the lingering effects of coloniality within families, framing it as a pervasive disease that persists even after a so-called "cure." The structure of this thesis is non-linear, employing storytelling and the reinsertion of past narratives to uncover deeper meaning.
